Run for a Reason
If you’re a competitive runner, a casual walker, or you just want to support a worthy cause, the Run for Rwanda 5K is the race for you. You can test your late-summer fitness on our mostly flat 5K course or just enjoy Cottonwood Creek’s tree-lined trails and stunning view of the Front Range.
5K Course:
The course is fairly flat and follows a route entirely within Cottonwood Creek Park. The running surface is about 50% maintained dirt paths with the remainder on paved walkways (the path on the south side of the creek was recently paved). The finish, staffed by the Pikes Peak Road Runners, is on the park's grass soccer fields. The course is good for spectators, as participants can see runners for several hundred meters at the start and the finish.
Course Map:

Jog strollers are welcome, although we ask that those running or walking with them start near the back of the pack to avoid blocking the trail for faster runners. A footbridge was recently added, making the spillway crossing easy to negotiate.
1K Children's Fun Run
Children under 10 are invited to participate in a free fun run at 9:30 a.m., which follows a course encircling the park's central soccer fields and which remains entirely in view of spectators throughout the run.
Barefoot Division
Most runners in Rwanda run without shoes. To show solidarity with our friends in Kibali, the Colorado Springs race includes a barefoot runner division. Experienced barefoot runners are encouraged register in the barefoot division and compete against others running the entire race without shoes or foot covering of any kind.
Team Division
Teams may be formed by schools, businesses, clubs, churches, or just groups of friends. There may be a maximum of eight runners per team; scores are determined by adding the first three finishers’ times.
High school teams may be formed by runners who will be in the 9th through 12th grades during the 2011-2012 school year. There are septarate categories for high school boys and high school girls.
Open co-ed teams may be formed by runners of any age but must contain both male and female runners. A team's cumulative time will be determined by adding together the fastest three finishers' times, if the team's top three include both a male and female runner. If a team's top three runners are all of the same gender, the top two times will be added together with the time of the next fastest runner of the opposite gender on that team (e.g., if a team's top three runners are male, the top two runners' times will be combined with the time of that team's first female finisher).
Awards will be presented in the following categories:
- Top two male and female finishers.
- Top male and female barefoot runners.
- Top three finishers in each of 12 age groups.
- Top team in each of the open co-ed and high school boys’ and high school girls’ divisions (awards go to scoring team members only).
