The community of Kibali is in the small east-central African country of Rwanda—a lush green, mountainous nation called the “Land of a Thousand Hills.” Kibali is in the country’s northeastern Byumba Province, near the Uganda border. The needs in this region are immense.

  • Most residents survive by farming tiny, hilly plots of land.
  • The average resident lives on less than $1 a day.
  • Only 1 in 7 Rwandans can afford a secondary education (free government-funded schooling ends at grade 6).
  • There is only 1 doctor for every 50,000 residents.
  • Due to poor health care, the average life expectancy is 46 years.

Through our relationships with community leaders in Kibali, we are working to find long term solutions to these needs and help the people of Kibali overcome poverty.

How You Can Help

If you are running or walkling, your entry fee alone is a great help, but if you would like to do more, ask family and friends to sponsor your run/walk.  If you’re not running, please consider sponsoring a friend who is. You can make a lasting difference in the community of Kibali! Sponsorships help impoverished Rwandans in three ways.

  1. The purchase of livestock provides food, fertilizer, and future income for families. (Over the past two years we have been able  to purchase more than 100 goats, pigs, and cows for impoverished families in Kibali. In turn, each of these families is obligated  to contribute at least one of their animal's offspring to other community members, so this is a gift that truly keeps on giving.)
  2. Since school is only free through 6th grade; scholarships are crucial to completing the education of Kibali’s youth. (In the past two years, we have funded more than 50 scholarships to a very grateful group of Kibali's youth.)
  3. The most urgent need in the community continues to be the health clinic. Thanks in part to the more than $30,000 contributed to the clinic by the past two Run for Rwanda events, the the dispensary/urgent care and maternity wings of the clinic are complete; funds raised by this year's race will help fund the HIV/AIDS wing.

100% of sponsorships you raise will help fund these effective programs which offer long term, life changing solutions.
